HMH Sked® Patient Evacuation System
The HMH Sked®'s simple design makes it highly versatile for use in hospitals and contaminated areas. In hospitals, it's stored in flat bags (four per bag) hung on a wall, ideally in a discreet yet accessible location. To use, simply pull the cord attached to the zippers to open the bag, remove one Sked® at a time, and unbuckle the straps. It is ideal for hospital evacuations.
Obese Patients: For obese patients, use the Skedco Stairway Lowering System for safe evacuation.
Danger: Never use handrails as anchors for lowering patients on stairways. Poorly attached handrails can detach, causing injury or death to patients and rescuers. This can also pin a lower rescuer against the wall.
Mass Casualty Incidents: This litter is designed for mass casualty incidents, including those involving weapons of mass destruction, hospital evacuations, and hazmat situations requiring Level A protection.
The HMH Sked® is extremely versatile, easily dragged over various terrains, including stairways. It requires less effort from rescuers wearing Level A protection. Patients can be rolled or dragged onto the Sked®, reducing rescuer fatigue and enabling the rescue of more victims. A downed rescuer can be loaded using their air tank for leverage and evacuated before standby rescuers need to suit up, thus avoiding deploying the standby team.
A rope attaches to the tow strap for extraction from the hot zone by decon personnel, conserving rescuer energy and air supply, resulting in more saved victims.
Storage and Transport: HMH Sked® units can be stored and shipped on pallets (up to 200 per pallet), stackable three high (8 ft x 3 ft x 7 ft). Bagged strap sets are stored in moisture-resistant boxes on top. Pallets can be sling-loaded under helicopters or transported on light trucks. Two people can easily attach the straps. Assembly takes only 1-2 minutes.
HMH Sked® units can also be rolled (1-4 per bundle) for easy storage in rescue or fire apparatus compartments, enabling rapid deployment.
Hazmat Operations: Emergency responses to hazardous materials incidents are dangerous, complex, personnel-intensive, and expensive. The HMH Sked®, combined with new tactics, significantly improves rescue capabilities by enabling the rapid removal of numerous patients while minimizing rescuer risk. Its potential is limited only by the creativity and expertise of trainers and field personnel. Given the increasing frequency of hazmat incidents and the potential for terrorist attacks, the HMH Sked® provides a crucial tool for safe and efficient rescue operations.
